Spiral Jetty

Twenty people were asked to enter an empty room and follow instructions they heard on i-pods. Along with the choreographic instructions they heard fragmented stories, text, dialogue and music on the theme of time, relativity, and love at the speed of light. During this twenty-minute experience they were filmed.

Spiral Jetty, an installation experimenting with architecture, performance and film, asked the public to give up being a casual observer and to be both audience and actor. Our intention is to show that all perception is subjective. Just as architecture gives context to action, the recorded image gives context to existence. It remembers little things long after we’ve forgotten everything. It remembers a place long after it has forgotten you.

Inspired by Robert Smithson’s theories of environmental interaction, The Other Theatre continues its exploration of transformative spaces, begun at Studio 303’s the Factory Project with the piece Afterlife.
